Four Bands Who Inspired Us To Make Koo Koo Kanga Roo

People always ask Bryan and I why we started Koo Koo Kanga Roo and of course the answer is: BECAUSE WE WANTED TO!

What most people don't know is that when it all began (way back in 2008), we had no real idea or plan for what Koo Koo Kanga Roo was going to be. We were just goofing off and seeing what happened. All of this made me think about what sort of music we were into and what kind of bands inspired us to eventually make Koo Koo Kanga Roo.

1. Best Fwends

I saw Best Fwends at SXSW in 2006 and they were insane. Two dudes jumping around screaming into microphones to super spazzy 8 bit/punk songs. Go listen to their amazing album "Alphabetically Arranged" for free on Bandcamp.

Fellow midwesterners The Cool Kids totally made us want to be a hip hop duo. It was rad seeing two young dudes doing an throwback style of hip hop that didn't feel like a gimmick.

Guess what? You don't need drums in your band. You can just use an iPod instead and then nobody has to sit in the back and hit stuff. ZibraZibra taught us that. They put on a crazy show in a way Bryan and I had never seen before. Now Kid Z produces and engineers all of our songs. We'll be in love forever. Deal with it.

Both Bryan and I are huge comedy fans. SNL is my favorite show. It was important to include an element of comedy in our band. Not only did Flight of the Conchords succeed in creating a super-funny live standup comedy show, they also spun it into two incredible seasons for HBO. Also, top-notch banter. Good banter goes a long way in our book.
